Teknik Menulis Tesis phd Dan Panduan Menghadapi Viva

Membuat phd adalah suatu pengalaman yang cukup menyeronokan jika ia membuahkan hasil dan berjaya dihabiskan dengan jayanya. Pengalaman seseorang adalah berbeza-beza mengikut bidang dan tempat pengajian masing-masing. Pengalanan di luar Negara tentunya berbeza jika dibandingkan dengan dalam negeri. Bidang kejuruteraan pula biasanya lebih senang berbanding dengan bidang sains sosial ataupun theology. Membuat phd di luar negeri tentulah kehidupan pelajar dan keluarga lebih menyeronokan dengan suasana yang baru dan cuaca yang berbeza. Pengajian tidak terganggu oleh urusan – urusan keluarga dan saudara mara. Berbeza pula dengan pengajian di dalam negeri, urusan-urusan berkenaan berjalan seperti biasa dan sering membuatkan kerja –kerja tertangguh. Walau bagaimana pun, di luar Negara, pelajar-pelajar akan mengalami proses kemurungan dan mengambil masa untuk menyesuaikan diri dengan persekitaran baru, bahasa dan budaya masyarakat setempat. Antara tempat tumpuan pelajar di luar Negara adalah seperti Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Jepun, German, USA dan Kanada.

Elemen yang paling penting bagi pengajian phd adalah penulisan tesis. Tesis adalah suatu olahan kerja makmal atau kaji selidik dan pembacaan artikel yang berkaitan bagi di persembahkan kepada pemeriksa untk dinilai kerja-kerja kita itu. Pemeriksa tidak akan melihat hasil kerja atau hasil akhir ujikaji kita di makmal. Mereka akan membaca tesis kita dan segala kemusykilan atau penjelasan lanjut akan ditanya semasa ujian lisan(viva).

It is important to submit your draft chapter as soon as you complete it. A good supervisor will read and make any grammatically error or sentences correction.

I am very lucky because my supervisor, Dr Neil A. Rowson is very helpful in that sense. There several tool you can apply to enhance your thesis quality.

1. A proper record and notes in your log book will help your memory to recall any doubt when you do the writing.
2. Endnote or other bibliography software to help your bibliography format. This kind of software will help you to manage the bibliography while you are writing.
3. Table of contents format which you could found from ms word. This TOC will help you create the table of contents, figures and tables with their respective page automatically.
4. Proper management or filing of article and books will help you to find the reference while you writing.
5. Ask your friends to read and comment your chapter before you submit the draft to your supervisor.
6. An academic sentence rather than general sentence increase the quality of your thesis.
7. A general academic sentence to begin your writing provided from several site is very useful for you. Sometimes, we know what to write but do not know how or where to start.

My entry this time is about thesis writing. I would like to share my experience during my thesis writing some time ago at Birmingham University.
Before you start your writing, it is important to ask your supervisor whether your data is good enough to start the writing. Some of my friends did their writing during their experimental time but at the end of the day, he was very upset because the texts have to be deleted because it was not in line with their data. Sometimes we got unpredictable data.

1. Writing a thesis not necessary to start with first chapter and finished with final chapter but otherwise you could start with data analysis chapter than literature review than conclusion and so on with final chapter surprisingly is introduction chapter!
2. Draft your thesis outline and discuss with your supervisor.
3. Draft your gun chart time schedule for your draft outline to manage your time.
4. During your writing, it is useful to read as many as English book as you could to establish your mind in English. This effect comes without your knowledge!
5. Start your writing as early as you can i.e. 4am. This is the most barakah time to start your writing as your brain still fresh and nobody could disturb your attentions. Dr Abdullah As Saudi give this useful tips.
6. When you are out of ideas for particular topic or sub topic, jump to other topic or sub topic. That particular uncompleted topic or sub topic would be completed at other fresh day.
